The five star Cratos Premium Hotel, located in the Cypriot port of Kyrenia, is a brand new destination which features a casino and its own outdoor live music venue, the Port Stage. The hotel also includes an extensive digital audio system, with Yamaha mixing consoles, processors and loudspeakers at its heart.
The only Premium category hotel on Cyprus, Cratos is also the island’s largest and is built around the premise of Las Vegas-style entertainment. As well as the Port Stage - which sees performances by international artists as well as Turkey’s biggest stars - high quality distributed audio had to be installed throughout the hotel, including the casino, spa, five restaurants, five bars, banqueting balcony and 11 rooms for events and meetings.
The audio system was designed and installed by Major Group of Nicosia and Istanbul-based Ipoint-Event. “The area that the system covers is very large and using conventional cabling would have resulted in too much signal loss, so the answer was to use fibre optics.” says project engineer Yilmaz Yeniyol of Ipoint-Event.
“We chose to use a Dante network with Yamaha products, because it was possible to control the entire system with two DME64 digital mixing engines.”
In addition to the DMEs, a satellite DME4io-ES is installed, along with a range of interface cards, including eight MY16-AUD (Dante), four MY16-AE (AES/EBU), four MY8-ADDA96, four MY16-MD64 (MADI) and one MY16-ES64 (EtherSound).
Live entertainment takes place in the bars and restaurants as well as on the Port Stage, so five Yamaha digital mixing consoles feature - a PM5D, two M7CL-48ES, an LS9-32 and an 01V96, plus nine SB168-ES stage boxes. A range of powered Yamaha loudspeakers are also installed, including 20 DSR112 12“ two-way, 20 MSR 250 10“ two-way, 12 x DSR118W 18“ subs and 12 x MSR 100 8“ bass reflex units.
The system is controlled via laptops running Yamaha Studio Manager software, making adjustments very straightforward. A range of presets is also programmed to take into account the different requirements for the system at various times of the day.
“The system is very user friendly, flexible and the sound is great,” says Yilmaz. “The hotel owners have been very impressed with the results and they really like the ability to control different areas with a laptop.
“Importantly, such a high quality system has helped to increase their confidence in booking international stars for the Port Stage. With around 70 concerts planned for it this year, as well as guests dancing into the night at Cage - the club night after each show - the hotel’s entertainment is unrivalled in the region.”
